Dusting off Ma Rani’s Cook Book

Ma Rani and I have had a great day brainstorming new recipe ideas for our supper club which is six years old this October, time flies when you are having fun cooking! Ma reminisced about her childhood learning how to cook from Bejee. I in turn am very lucky to have learnt to cook from Ma. Bejee is always with us and when Ma and I cook together, which is pretty much every day now, we know she is with us. Back in 1984 Ma wrote her North Indian cookery book, however, it was rejected by every publisher because ‘Madhur Jaffrey had the monopoly on Indian cooking’ and no publisher wanted to compete. Ma was featured in the Islington Gazette, as were a number of her recipes. Forward to 2015 and we are lucky to have so many cookery books and programmes showcasing different styles of Indian cooking. Ma lost out, I think wrongly (but I am biased!). So, we have gone through the book again, all 121 recipes and of course I am totally inspired by one of my favourite film’s ‘Julie and Julia’ so I have decided to cook my way through all the recipes and share them with you as I go.

“Joginder’s Supperclub is run by my mother & I from our family home in Tufnell Park. Now into our 7th year we provide a popular alternative to dining out with our monthly Supper club. We support the Tufnell Park Tavern Food Market as regular traders and take the headache out of cooking for dinner parties and events for many Tufnell Park residents by creating and delivering our North Indian Punjabi Food direct to the door and ready to eat. My family have been Tufnell Park residents for 40 years so it was important to us to use our cooking to support our local community”

Charity begins in the kitchen!

Summer at Joginder’s Supperclub

imageWe had a great Supperclub last Saturday! Carriages were close to 1am as we were all so engrossed in conversation and fine wine,  once dessert had been served of course!

We were very pleased that an unchanged family recipe went down well. Ma Rani remembers Joginder making this dish when she was a young girl, the recipe was never written down so through trial and error we think we got it right! Joginder’s Shai Lamb ~

Our Pomegranate Kachumber makes a perfect refreshing and flavoursome accompaniment to our more fiery dishes!

image  And finally for dessert Coconut & Pistachio Phirni with an added touch of a delicate edible flower, Purple Lavatoria.
